Old Cemetery

Description

The “Old Cemetery, established in the second half of the 19th century, is located in the southwest part of Garbów. A winding road, meandering through the ravine up the steep hill, leads to the cemetery. Situated on the top of the elevation, the cemetery is surrounded by a valley from three sides. It is divided into two parts by an alley, near which the family tombstones of the former meritorious parishioners are located. The magnificent chapel features the remnants of the Moskalewski family, the owners of land estates, and nearby lie the graves of many people of merit who contributed greatly to the development of the region, such as Józef Nakonieczny, social activist and the Lublin Land member of Russian parliament, Anna Dłuska, the heiress of Tomaszowice, Witold Trzciński, the owner of the Leśce estate, Jadwiga née Countess Grabowska Odrowąż Pieniążek, Laura Trzcińska, the daughter of General Henryk Kamiński, Tadeusz Trzciński, the doctor of philosophy. The archaeological excavations carried out in the vicinity of the cemetery in the 1980s and 1990s revealed traces of a settlement dating from the 8th and 9th centuries. Among the findings were large numbers of ceramics, remnants of the semi-dugouts with a stone kiln featuring the earthenware material preserved in the hearth (a complete vessel with an s-shaped profile, filled with charcoal and sand mixed with ashes) and a clay weaver’s whorl. Other earthenware fragments date from the 10th and 11th centuries.
